The St. Louis Fed and FRED

One of the twelve regional banks of the US Federal Reserve. It hosts FRED, the most widely used free economic database in the world.

In brief

  • The Federal Reserve System, established by the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, comprises twelve regional banks.
  • The St. Louis Fed serves the Eighth District (Arkansas and parts of six neighbouring states), with branches in Little Rock, Louisville and Memphis.
  • FRED — Federal Reserve Economic Data — is its public database of statistical series, free of charge, online since 1991: several hundred thousand series from more than a hundred sources.
  • It also runs FRASER (digitised historical archives) and ALFRED (successive vintages of the data).

FRED is the tool that allows you to check an economic figure for yourself instead of taking it on trust. It contains series on prices, wages, exchange rates and employment, published by American and international statistical agencies — and you can chart, compare and download without an account or subscription.

It is notably through it that the exchange rate checks needed for any conversion are carried out — those required, for example, to read the Big Mac Index, or to compare an amount in francs from the 1990s with its present-day equivalent.
