Jim Cantalupo (1943-2004)

The executive who, in 2003, halted the race to open new restaurants in order to revive existing ones. He died in office fifteen months later.

In brief

  • Born in 1943, died on 19 April 2004, aged 60, of a heart attack, during a franchisee convention in Orlando.
  • Joined McDonald's in 1974; became chairman and chief executive officer in January 2003.
  • Launched the “Plan to Win”: stop growing by opening restaurants, grow through the sales of existing restaurants.
  • His appointment followed the first quarterly loss in the group's history (end of 2002).

The “Plan to Win” is a strategic turning point whose stakes, from the operators' point of view, are direct: a network that opens fewer restaurants puts its own franchisees in competition with each other less within the same catchment area.

The previous decade had been one of breakneck expansion — precisely the period in which the Antibes dispute took shape. A franchisee's challenge, addressed to its network head, to a new opening too close by belongs to that economy.
